BACK TO NATURE TOUR

If you like being in the thick of nature's little critters, begin your day at Beaver Meadow Audubon Center located on Welch Road, south of Route 20A off Route 77. Spend the morning exploring over 5 miles of marked hiking trails through this wildlife sanctuary. Along with a gift shop in an enlarged visitor center, nature programs on many subjects are given. Jenny Glen, a 1-mile circular boardwalk with hand rails, provides an outdoor experience for the physically challenged. An observatory on site is open the first and third Saturdays from April through October.

Leave Beaver Meadow, head south on Route 77, then head south on Route 98/78 until you reach Route 362. Take 362 south to Route 39. Travel east on Route 39, and turn right (east) on Denton Corners Road. This road will lead you to the "Grand Canyon of the East," Letchworth State Park. The 17-mile-long gorge was carved over millions of years by the Genesee River and is a beautiful place to spend the afternoon. The park offers many scenic overlooks into the 600-foot-deep gorge, as well as the beautiful Glen Iris Inn, three major waterfalls, the William Pryor Letchworth Museum, picnic areas, and the Mount Morris Dam, where guided tours are available and a visitor center is open 7 days a week.

While at the park, the family can enjoy two swimming pools, weekend horseback riding, 20 miles of marked hiking trails, or a guided nature walk. For the more adventurous, there is hot air ballooning with Balloons Over Letchworth and white water rafting guided by Adventure Calls. Special weekend events and a summer lecture series are offered on Tuesdays. For overnight stays, rustic cabins, campsites, efficiency units, and the Glen Iris Inn provide comfortable accommodations. You can also rest easy at the Genesee Falls Inn in Portageville, or other nearby motels and campgrounds.

Stopping at overlooks along the way, go north through the park as far as the Perry exit, following signs to the village of Perry. There, enjoy evening activities at Silver Lake Drive-In Theatre, Wyoming County International Speedway, and the Arts Council for Wyoming County. Nearby, Silver Lake offers fishing and boat rentals from Silver Lake Marina, or you can launch your own boat at other marinas on the lake.

A scenic drive through the rolling hills and valleys of Wyoming County is sure to be beautiful during any season.
